June Newsletter from SoCal Nutrition & Wellness

Our past Details Details Bride, Janice, released her June Newsletter from SoCal Nutrition & Wellness. She provides some great information on healty eating this month and shares the importance of eating seafood. Here is an article in this month’s Newsletter:

Essentail Seafood
Most of us could use more seafood in our diets. Seafood is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help boost immunity and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and other ailments due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-3 fats are especially important for women of the child-bearing age, pregnant/nursing women, and young children. Unfortunately, some fish carry toxins that can become harmful when consumed frequently. Seafood contaminants include heave metals (such as mercury, which affects brian function and development), industrial chemicals (PCBs and dioxins) and pesticides (DDT). These toxins usually originate on land and make their way into the smallest plants and animals at the base of the ocean food web. As smaller species are eaten by larger ones, contaminants are concentrated and accumulated. Large predatory fish- like swordfish and shark- end up with the most toxins.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a website full of great resources. You can download wallet cards, visit their blog, find sustainable seafood recipes, and much more. The Super Green List is their list of seafood to consume that is both good for you and does not harm the oceans. The Super Green list highlights products that are currently on the Seafood Watch “Best Choices” (green) list, are low in environmental contaminants (less than 216 ppb mercury and 11 ppb PCBs), and are good sources of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (providing at least 250 mg/d of EPA + DHA omega-3 fats when 8 ounces of seafood consumed in one week).

The Best of the Best:
-Albacore Tuna (troll- or pole- caught, from the U.S. or British Columbia)
-Freshwater Coho Salmon (framed in tank systems, from the U.S.)
-Mussels (farmed)
-Oysters (farmed)
-Pacific Sardines (wild-caught)
-Rainbow Trout (farmed)
-Salmon (wild-caught, from Alaska)

Second Best: Low in contaminants and provide between 100-250 mg/d of omega-3 fats, assuming 8 ounces of fish per week
-Arctic Char (farmed)
-Bay Scallops (farmed)
-Crayfish (farmed, from the U.S.)
- Dungeness Crab (wild-caught, from California, Oregon, or Washington)
-Longfin Squid (wild-caught, from the U.S. Atlantic
-Pacific Cod (longline-caught, from Alaska)

Pillow inspired wedding in Malibu

This wedding was inspired by a PILLOW. Yes, a pillow in shades of metal, from gold, bronze, silver, borrowed from Melissa’s mom Terry. Luckily she didn’t need it as we kept it for almost half a year, matching fabrics, font colors and everything in between. Melissa and Matt had their beach wedding at the home of a dear friend that had access to the beach within steps. Malibu wind can be tricky so a tent was added to the already covered pool deck. The tide was friendly but a platform was built just in case as we did not want Melissa and Matt to be swept away, well not in that gorgeous gown. Table top had to be natural, drift wood but elegant with tons of candles, and vases in gold and silver mercury with pops of soft floral. Fiori Fresco had fun with this one, as he got giddy selecting the flatware.

The modern beach house, floor to ceiling glass window walls, were part of the inspiration for the lucite invites designed by Nichelle of Details A La Carte. But the m&m was Melissa and Matt’s signature, also seen topping the Vanilla Bake Shop wedding cake. Melissa surprised Matt with a groom’s cake, of a porche convertible, with dog Toby in the driver’s seat. Sunny from Filgrees Cake did such an awesome job, she even included the red stitching seen in the leather seats of the car. Good Gracious Catering provided all the exquisite cuisine (one of my favs, Miso Black Cod) and thanks to John for capturing every detail. He has such an ability to remember to get every little thing!

Eco Chic in the Wine Country

When Amy & Nick were looking for the perfect setting for their wedding, they struck gold when they looked at Ponte Winery in Temecula. Amy and Nick met at their local church and after attending their small group every week, their friendship evolved over dining out together. With Amy’s back ground attending two culinary schools as well as her passion for food, Ponte Winery was the ideal location for their nuptials. As they started the planning process, Amy & Nick were all about being green and using eco friendly products throughout every aspect of their wedding. Ponte Winery has a quaint setting…big barn, pretty orange trees, and of course the vineyards. It was a beautiful setting for an outside wedding, yet it provided an exciting switch in atmosphere as the reception took place in the winery’s barrel room. The winery uses sustainable farming techniques and is an advocate of farm to table cuisine that bridges the gap between farming, food, health and local economies.

Amy was quite the fashionista wearing a beautiful eco couture custom dress made out of natural shantung hemp silk, a statement hair accessory and classic pearls. Very “Sex in the City”….Not too many people could pull off this look, but Amy looked like a million bucks. The wedding décor had a lot of influence from Amy’s love for gardens and Suzanne, Suzanne M. Smith Floral Design, was the perfect fit as their floral designer. She works with only local, organic, sustainable flower growers and her business practices are focused on low carbon footprint from biodegradable ribbons to non-toxic sealant sprays. Shades of purples and greens were the color palette their garden décor. From organic grapes, to artichokes, apples and a variety of different fruits, Suzanne created unique table centerpieces which not only added color but added a variety of textures which simply reflected their lifestyle. Steve Hoffmann, Hoffmann Photographer, captured all these fabulous details and of course, Amy selected Hoffmann based on his style and his partnership with an eco-friendly wedding album company. All of their letter press paper goods were custom designed and made of hand crafted tree-free paper with vegetable-based inks. Guests enjoyed the surroundings and fun was had by a surprise dove release during the ceremony, the artistry of a balloon twisting for our cocktail reception, a personalized magic show during dinner and the finishing touch of a candy station for late night snacks. A great way to end the Easter weekend!

Anuja & Arif wanted to take their engagement shoot in NYC, which was fitting since they are from New York. I love the shots around the city…great atmosphere and neat lighting! John Hong with John and Joseph Photography is a master at shooting couples. John always seems to wow me with his work. I am looking forward to Anuja & Arif’s wedding coming up this summer.
